事情是这样的：一天晚上，小猫做了一个梦，它梦见一位仙女对它说：“小猫，你不是想和加菲猫一样出名，又想和机器猫哆啦A梦一样有许多法宝，还想和玛丽猫一样漂亮吗？我可以满足你的愿望。只要你坚持九九81天，每天做一件好事，我就会让你的愿望实现的。”仙女说完这话就飞走了。
小猫睁开双眼，天已大亮。他不由得想起了梦中仙女说的话。它有点不信，可它却在床边闻到了像是从天宫带来的自然的香味呢！这下它可相信仙女的话了！于是，它连忙跳下床，去做它平生做的第一件好事去了。
出了门，它看见老山羊爷爷正推着一车煤费力地走着。小猫平时对老山羊爷爷可不尊敬呐！还给它起了个外号叫什么老胡子爷爷呢！小猫想，我平日对老山羊爷爷一点也不好，这次我就帮帮他吧!于是，边向着老山羊爷爷走去。它不仅帮老山羊爷爷把煤运到了家，还向老山羊爷爷承认了错误呢！小猫想：“我今天帮老山羊爷爷把煤运到了家，不就是做了一件好事吗？”想到这儿，它开心地跑回了家。
以后，做好事渐渐成了小猫的一种习惯：它今天帮小白兔拔萝卜，明天为鹅大哥捉老鼠，后天为小百灵搭窝......它慢慢地不再游手好闲，做白日梦，而变得勤奋好学起来。大家都不再叫它“小坏猫”而改叫“小乖猫”了。
一天，它正满头大汗地为黄牛伯伯种地，仙女飞到了它身边，和蔼地对它说：“小猫，你做得真好！现在，我可以实现你的愿望了！”一阵清风吹过，小猫的愿望全实现了！小猫高兴极了！
